Description
Offered for sale in this lot is an exceptional example of a Deutsche Werke semi-automatic, hammerless, pocket pistol. The pistol is chambered in 6.35mm (.25 ACP). The pistol follows the design of the original German Ortgies patent, and was crafted by Deutsche Werke between 1921-1924. During this time this pistol was of advanced design and high quality construction with relatively few parts, well sealed against dirt. Metal components were forged or machined, and assembly in general made no use of screws, even securing the wooden grips with metal clips. The hammerless action depended on a spring-loaded striker to fire the cartridge. As in early Colt and Browning pocket pistols, the Ortgies striker also operated as an ejector as the slide traveled backwards after discharge. Unusual design features included the safety and the magazine. The safety was a lever inset into the back of the grip and, with the gun cocked, forced backward out of the grip into the "safe" position by spring tension from the firing pin upon depression of a button under the slide. Thus, engaging the safety simultaneously reduced tension on the firing pin spring. To disengage the safety, a shooter simply would squeeze the grip, pressing the lever forward and locking it flush with the back of the frame. This excellent example retains most of the original blue finish and is clearly marked "Deutsche Werke" and "Werk Erfurt" on the left side of the slide and "Ortgies Patent" on the right side of the slide. The original magazine and slide are stamped with the correct script "D" monogram as are the brass medallions in the wood grips. "Germany" is stamped above the serial number. Lastly, the barrel is stamped "CAL. 6.35 m/m". This pistol is tight mechanically, fully functional and has an excellent bright bore. The Ortgies pistols were favorite personal weapons with many World War II German officers. It is interesting to note that outlaw John Dillinger carried an Ortgies, and several hundred Ortgies pistols saw service with Finnish prison authorities through the World War II period. The pistol includes one magazine. This pistol qualifies as a Curio & Relic firearm. The pistol requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: 64498.
